MAU Game Lab Jam Spring 2025: A hybrid game jam building a virtual bridge across Sweden

Malmö University’s Game Lab organized the first hybrid Game Jam over the weekend of March 28-30. This is the first time that this event has been open for external participants, who were given the opportunity to join remotely.

The MAU Game Lab jam is a recurring event that is held several times each year. The goal is to team up to develop a game over the course of two and a half days, around a central theme and optional gameplay constraints that are revealed at the start of the jam.

Announced to students from Malmö University (MAU), Högskolan I Skövde (HiS), Aalborg University, and Erhvervsakademi Dania, during Feb-March 2025, we hit the highest number of sign-ups ever! In total, 42 participants registered: 30 of them from MAU and 11 of them from HiS.

All developed games were submitted to the jam’s Itch.io website. You can try them as well!

The jam’s theme was “LOOP(S)”. Themes are deliberately picked so that they can be differently interpreted by participants, fostering diversity in the games’ designs. Some teams translated “LOOP(S) into time loops, whereas others designed looping movements or round elements as relevant parts of their core gameplay.

GTA awarded prizes to all participants in the 5 winning teams. Winners were decided by votes from the registered participants. Here’s the final scoreboard:

1st prize: Swing and Miss

2nd prize: Unarmed and Dangerous

3rd prize: The Ceaseless Labyrinth of the Gods

4th prize: GUN GUN GUN

5th prize: Looped Pain

Overall, online and in-person participants reported the jam to be a great and fun experience, and the organizing team is looking forward to planning even bigger and better jams in the coming months. Stay tuned for more Game Lab Jam fun!
